MAIN PURPOSE

The Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer is responsible for supporting, facilitating, and advancing the Process Safety Management program at the Orbia St. Gabriel site. This role ensures the effective application of current PSM best practices across technical, operational, and engineering disciplines, with a strong focus on risk reduction, loss prevention, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.

As a key member of the Security, Safety, Health, and Environment (SSHE) team, the PSM Engineer coordinates and drives all PSM-related activities for site operations, providing technical leadership and guidance to ensure the integrity and safe operation of plant assets. The role collaborates closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, and sustain PSM improvement initiatives, ensuring objectives are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Through the application of technical expertise, practical field experience, and sound risk management principles, the PSM Engineer promotes a strong process safety culture, enhances organizational capability, and supports the site's commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement in process safety performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Process Safety Management (PSM) Program

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the St. Gabriel PSM program to ensure compliance with Orbia standards, regulatory requirements, and corporate objectives.

• PSM Systems, Standards, and Compliance

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance PSM procedures, processes, and management systems, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and effective monitoring of site performance.

• Process Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment

  • Lead and participate in process hazard analyses and risk studies, including HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL assessments, and other evaluations to identify, assess, and mitigate process safety risks.

• Incident Investigation and Learning

  • Lead or participate in process safety incident investigations, identify root causes, share lessons learned, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and strengthen organizational learning.

• Risk Reduction and Continuous Improvement

  • Identify, prioritize, and execute initiatives that reduce process safety risks, improve system reliability, and enhance operational performance through continuous improvement efforts and targeted projects.

• PSM Culture, Training, and Capability Development

  • Promote a strong process safety culture by providing technical guidance, training, coaching, and support to operations, maintenance, engineering, and reliability teams.

• Audits, Performance Monitoring, and Reporting

  • Participate in process safety audits and assessments, monitor PSM performance metrics, prepare reports and presentations, and communicate progress, risks, and improvement opportunities to site and corporate leadership.

• Stakeholder Engagement and Cross-Functional Coordination

• Collaborate with site leadership, corporate teams, and external stakeholders to coordinate PSM activities, share best practices, support strategic initiatives, and serve as a key process safety resource for the organization.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LANGUAGE, & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Education & Professional Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Formal Process Safety Management (PSM) qualification preferred.

• Project Management certification or formal project management training is advantageous.

Experience

• 3-5 years of experience in the chemical manufacturing industry.

• 3-5 years of experience working with Process Safety Management systems and programs.

• Experience independently managing projects with budget responsibility exceeding $50,000.

• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams in a manufacturing or industrial environment.

• Auditor experience is advantageous.

Technical Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of chemical process engineering, plant operations, and process safety principles.

• Thorough understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM) systems, methodologies, and best practices for high-hazard operations.

• Experience facilitating or leading process safety and risk assessments, including HAZOPs, PHAs, LOPAs, SIL Assessments, QRAs, and other risk analysis techniques.

• Experience developing, monitoring, and reporting key performance indicators (KPIs) related to process safety and operational performance.

• Desirable: Hands-on technical, engineering design, or operational background within a chemical manufacturing environment.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Ability to lead initiatives, facilitate technical discussions, and drive organizational change in support of process safety objectives.

General Endurance: The role may involve standing for extended periods, moving between plant areas, and performing hands-on safety activities. Requires climbing stairs and walking for extended periods as part of routine tasks

Vision: Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens, and to adjust focus

Hearing: Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication at normal speaking levels

This role is based in St. Gabriel, LA. We also offer an environment that promotes a healthy work-life balance.

The compensation for this position is typically range from $140,000 - $154,000.

The compensation for this position is included above. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.
